Post gig - with Lord Jeff

From 3am last night:

It's late, and quiet. I'm home after the gig at the Beachcomber in Quincy, MA. {I'd been there once before, about 2 years ago, seeing Tony play with the World's Greatest Sinners.} It was a misty, slightly rainy night over by Wollaston Beach.

Our friends Aeolian Race opened the night. They started off unassuming, but revved into high gear shortly thereafter. Their set was very enjoyable - all members of Black Fortress were in agreement on this. (Tony was absent this evening - a first, due to a scheduling snafu.)

Our set went fairly well. I was a tad bit nervous since it'd been a little while since our last show. We debuted a new song, "Right Around Here". Other songs included:
Model Cafe
House of Edward Devotion
Twelve Gross
Your Past
Southern Hymnal
Ari
Fata Morgana
Afyonkarahisar Battle Cry
Joe and Rich sounded terrific. Rock solid, they was. Tony's absence left a noticeable gap, but the sound is still cool, IMHO.

Then on came The Beasts of England, a duo. They covered some Iggy & The Stooges, in addition to their fun sloppy bluesy rock noise. Guitar and drums. The singer/guitarist wore sunglasses for most of the set. He also removed his shirt. He moved around a lot, collapsing in front of his amp and rolling around on the floor some, too. Anyway, he was playing an out of print custom Fender Jaguar baritone guitar through a bass cab and it all sounded HUGE. At one point, Gary, who helped us set up the show mentioned the band, but he referred to them as the Beasts of New England, which I found hilarious.

Joe commented about many of the performers of the night, saying "Where do these young rockers get their toothpick legs?" Hee hee. He's right. Them folks was real skinny. I wanted to feed them or something, but you know it would just be a drop in the bucket. Reminded me of Scott a bit, honestly. Gaunt figures with long-ass hair, just living for the rock.

Anyway, last up was Lord Jeff - a trio, on Thurston Moore's Ecstatic Peace label. The Christ-like front figure sang and played a sweet SG (I must have one of these!!!). This band has some nice dynamics. At one point, they covered a Tears For Fears song ("Everybody Wants to Rule the World"). I even made it onto the dance floor for that. They went right from that cover into an extended jam that sounded like an old vinyl record. You know, a jazz one you listen to late at night when your mind meanders...The singer/guitarist and bass player both removed their heavy boots for the set, playing in socks and naked feet.

The house music in between acts was so loud I had my plugs in the whole night. I have to say, the room sounded awesome to me.

Fun show!
